Moderation policy
I would not expect moderation to be necessary on any member who took the test and passed on his/her own. However, I do foresee the problem of members helping their slightly less logical friends, and those friends helping their slightly less logical friends in turn, until the website is degraded. For that reason, never help anyone pass the test. There is also a strict moderation guideline, to guarantee that users are ratiophiles, and that the process is done fairly:
Users are allowed to be wrong and make mistakes. However, if a user says something that a logical person should reasonably be expected to know is wrong, he must also be ready to immediately see logic when it is shown to him. I.E. One must be willing to immediately accept one's error, if he is shown that he was in error.
If one holds to an illogical statement, even when his error is explained in a way that a logical person should be expected to understand, the user will receive a warning.
A warning works like this: The user can now see and post on the warning forums. The moderator or admin who warned him will post an explanation in the moderation thread, which the user can read and reply to. If the user either reasonably explains his actions as being appropriate, or realizes and accepts that he was being illogical, he will lose the "warned" role, and lose the ability to access the warning forums. If not, he will be banned. Repeat offenders will be banned.
So, in short, the full process is this:
- 1) User1 makes very illogical statement.
2) User2 explains why it was very illogical.
3) User1 denies that the point was illogical at all, and holds to it.
4) Moderator gives User1 the warning status.
5) User1 posts in the Warn/Ban thread.
6) Moderator either bans User1, or returns him to ratiophile status.
There are a few reasons it's done this way:
- It forces the user to explain themself, lest be banned.
- It keeps the matter as objective and fair as possible.
- It keeps the matter relatively private.
- It allows for easy reference by moderators in case of future offenses.
It's important to note a few more things:
- Again, it's completely okay to be wrong. Being wrong is good -- it's a learning experience. Just don't be unwilling to learn.
- It's okay to troll. However, if any member calls you out on trolling, you can't continue to troll. Basically, if you continue to troll past being called out on it, then there's no way to distinguish you from someone who is seriously arguing illogically, which will result in a warning. You don't have to say, "You are correct, I was trolling.", but you do have to stop the troll itself, if you want to continue to discuss that topic.
- I'd also discourage a new, unestablished user from trolling, as it will most likely just make him look stupid.
Although the above is the policy used to moderate the forums, this website belongs to the admins, and users can be banned at any time, for any reason an admin deems fit.
